About North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is a ceremonial county and the largest unitary authority area in England by area, established in 2023. It covers most of the historic county of Yorkshire, including the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks, the Vale of York, and a long coastline from Redcar to Filey. The county town is Northallerton. With a population of around 615,000, it is predominantly rural. It is famous for its breathtaking scenery, historic abbeys like Fountains and Rievaulx, the walled city of York (though now a separate unitary authority), and market towns such as Harrogate and Scarborough. Landmarks include the James Herriot tourism trail and the coastal village of Staithes. You can download the administrative boundary for North Yorkshire in GeoJSON and KML formats for further use.
