About north east lincolnshire

North East Lincolnshire is a unitary authority in Lincolnshire, formed in 1996, encompassing the towns of Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and Immingham along with surrounding villages on the south bank of the Humber estuary. This coastal area features the fishing port of Grimsby (once the world's largest fishing port), the seaside resort of Cleethorpes, and the major port of Immingham. The climate is maritime with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and fresh sea breezes typical of the Humber estuary, with more sunshine than inland areas. Culturally, North East Lincolnshire holds significant heritage with Grimsby's fishing industry (once the world's premier fishing port, now celebrated at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre with its restored trawler and exhibits telling the story of the industry). The area preserves important heritage including the Grimsby Dock Tower (iconic hydraulic accumulator tower, a landmark for miles), Immingham's docks (one of the UK's busiest ports, handling bulk cargoes and the major port for the Humber), and Cleethorpes' Victorian seaside resort character (its pier, promenade, and beach). Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway (heritage tramway) adds to the seaside attractions. The Humber estuary provides important bird habitats and the RSPB reserve at Tetney Marsh. Immingham's modern port (a major centre for oil refining and chemical industries) is economically vital. The villages of the area feature traditional Lincolnshire character. The annual Grimsby Fishing Festival celebrates the town's maritime heritage while Cleethorpes' traditional amusements and seafront attract visitors. The area's position on the Humber and its industrial and maritime character shape its identity. The Humber Bridge (across the estuary in North Lincolnshire) provides a link to the north. North East Lincolnshire's economy is undergoing transition from its fishing heritage to new industries including renewables and logistics while maintaining its strong maritime character. Boundary GIS data for North East Lincolnshire Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for preserving the fishing heritage, managing the Humber ports and estuary, and supporting the regeneration of this coastal area.
