About rutland
Rutland is a unitary authority and historic county in the East Midlands, formed in 1997, England's smallest historic county by area, encompassing the county town of Oakham, the town of Uppingham, and numerous villages within this compact but beautiful area. Rutland features Rutland Water (one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe), rolling countryside, and a strong sense of county identity. The climate is typical of the English Midlands with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and typical central England conditions. Culturally, Rutland maintains strong identity as England's smallest county, with fierce local pride and its own flag and traditions. The area preserves exceptional heritage including Oakham Castle (with its unique collection of horseshoes presented by visiting royalty and nobility), Uppingham School (one of England's leading public schools, with its magnificent buildings), and the villages with their traditional stone cottages and churches. Rutland Water (reservoir completed 1976) is the centrepiece of the county, offering extensive watersports, fishing, cycling (the 23-mile Rutland Water Cycle Route), and birdwatching (an internationally important nature reserve with ospreys and other rare birds). The Rutland County Museum and the Rutland Railway Museum preserve local history. The county's villages (including Empingham, Ketton, and Exton) feature attractive stone buildings and village greens. The annual Rutland Show (agricultural show) celebrates rural traditions. The county's position (the only landlocked county without a cathedral) and its small size create a strong community feel. The Rutland Round (long-distance footpath) offers walking through the county's countryside. Rutland's beauty, tranquility, and strong identity make it a desirable place to live despite its small size. The county motto 'Multum in Parvo' (much in little) reflects its character. Boundary GIS data for Rutland County Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing England's smallest county, protecting Rutland Water's environment, preserving its historic towns and villages, and supporting its unique community identity.
