About torbay

Torbay is a unitary authority and borough in Devon, formed in 1998, known as the 'English Riviera' for its mild climate, palm trees, and beautiful coastline. This coastal area encompasses the three towns of Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham, forming a conurbation along Tor Bay with a rich heritage as a Victorian seaside resort and fishing port. The climate is one of the mildest in the UK, with Torbay benefiting from its south coast position and shelter from prevailing winds, allowing palm trees and other subtropical plants to flourish. Culturally, Torbay holds exceptional significance with Torquay's elegant Victorian resort character (its harbour, palm-lined promenade, and Regency and Victorian architecture), Paignton's traditional seaside attractions (its pier, zoo, and beach), and Brixham's working fishing port (one of England's most active fishing harbours, with its colourful boats, fish market, and replica of the Golden Hind (in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the world)). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Torre Abbey (medieval abbey with historic gardens, now an art gallery and museum), Kent's Cavern (prehistoric caves with evidence of early human occupation), and the Agatha Christie connections (the author was born in Torquay, set many works in the area, and is commemorated with a literary festival and trail). The English Riviera Geopark (a UNESCO Global Geopark) recognises the area's outstanding geological heritage, including its caves, cliffs, and fossils. Torbay's coastline offers beautiful beaches (including Oddicombe, Meadfoot, and Goodrington), the South West Coast Path, and spectacular views across Lyme Bay. Brixham's harbour and fish market maintain the area's fishing traditions while Torquay's marina and Paignton's pier provide leisure facilities. The area's mild climate and beautiful scenery have made it a popular retirement and holiday destination for over two centuries. Boundary GIS data for Torbay Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this unique coastal area, preserving its Victorian heritage and Agatha Christie connections, protecting its UNESCO Geopark, and supporting sustainable tourism and fishing industries.
