About wiltshire

Wiltshire is a unitary authority area in Wiltshire, formed in 2009 from the merger of four former districts (Kennet, North Wiltshire, Salisbury, and West Wiltshire), encompassing the cathedral city of Salisbury, the historic towns of Trowbridge, Chippenham, Devizes, Marlborough, and Warminster, and numerous villages within one of England's most historically rich counties. This chalk downland county features Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury Cathedral, and the Salisbury Plain, forming a landscape of international archaeological significance. The climate is typical of southern England with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and warmer, drier conditions than western areas, with the chalk downland creating beautiful rolling landscapes. Culturally, Wiltshire holds world significance with Stonehenge (UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the world's most famous prehistoric monuments) and Avebury (the largest stone circle in Europe, also a World Heritage Site). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Salisbury Cathedral (one of England's finest, with its magnificent spire (the tallest in England), the best-preserved Magna Carta, and beautiful Close), Longleat (one of England's great stately homes, with its safari park, gardens, and maze), Wilton House (spectacular home of the Earls of Pembroke, with its art collection and gardens), and Lacock Abbey and village (National Trust, the village used extensively as a film set for Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, and many others). The Wiltshire Downs and Salisbury Plain offer spectacular walking including the Wessex Ridgeway and the Imber Range. The ancient White Horses (chalk figures carved into hillsides) are dotted across the county. The historic market towns of Marlborough (with its broad high street), Devizes (with its famous Caen Hill flight of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal), and Bradford-on-Avon (with its Saxon chapel and stone cottages) maintain their character. The Salisbury Plain is also the UK's largest military training area, adding a modern dimension to the ancient landscape. Boundary GIS data for Wiltshire Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this World Heritage landscape, preserving the incomparable prehistoric sites of Stonehenge and Avebury, protecting the cathedral city of Salisbury and its heritage, and balancing military training with conservation in this internationally significant county.
