Wiltshire is a unitary authority area in Wiltshire, formed in 2009 from the merger of four former districts (Kennet, North Wiltshire, Salisbury, and West Wiltshire), encompassing the cathedral city of Salisbury, the historic towns of Trowbridge, Chippenham, Devizes, Marlborough, and Warminster, and numerous villages within one of England's most historically rich counties. The Wiltshire Downs and Salisbury Plain offer spectacular walking including the Wessex Ridgeway and the Imber Range. The ancient White Horses (chalk figures carved into hillsides) are dotted across the county. The historic market towns of Marlborough (with its broad high street), Devizes (with its famous Caen Hill flight of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal), and Bradford-on-Avon (with its Saxon chapel and stone cottages) maintain their character.
