About west northamptonshire
West Northamptonshire is a unitary authority area in Northamptonshire, formed in 2021 from the merger of Northampton, Daventry, and South Northamptonshire districts, encompassing the large town of Northampton, the historic market towns of Daventry and Towcester, and numerous villages within the Northamptonshire countryside. This diverse area features Northampton's role as a major commercial centre, the historic Watling Street (now A5), and rich heritage from its shoe-making industry and Roman connections. The climate is typical of the English Midlands with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and typical central England conditions. Culturally, West Northamptonshire maintains strong identity with Northampton (one of England's largest towns, famous for its shoe-making heritage (celebrated at the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, home to the world's largest collection of shoes), its historic churches including the rebuilt St Paul's, and its role as a commercial centre with the Grosvenor Centre and the new university). The area preserves important heritage including Althorp (the Spencer family seat, where Diana, Princess of Wales is buried), Sulgrave Manor (ancestral home of George Washington's family), Canons Ashby (National Trust Elizabethan manor house), and the Roman heritage of Towcester (the Roman town of Lactodorum). Daventry retains its historic market town character with its church and market place while the villages feature traditional Northamptonshire ironstone cottages. The Grand Union Canal runs through the district offering walking and boating while the Northamptonshire countryside provides rolling hills and agricultural land. Silverstone (one of the world's most famous motor racing circuits, home of the British Grand Prix) lies just outside the district but is closely associated. Northampton's excellent transport links (including M1 and mainline railway to London) support its role as a major commuter and commercial centre while the surrounding villages maintain their rural character. Boundary GIS data for West Northamptonshire Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting shoe-making heritage preservation, management of Althorp and other historic houses, and sustainable development in this growing area.
