About somerset
Somerset is a unitary authority area in Somerset, formed in 2023 from the merger of four former districts (West Somerset, Taunton Deane, Sedgemoor, and South Somerset), encompassing the towns of Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Frome, Minehead, and numerous villages across one of England's most beautiful and historically rich counties. This extensive unitary area features the Quantock Hills, Exmoor National Park, the Somerset Levels, and the coastline of the Bristol Channel. The climate is mild and maritime with moderate rainfall, with Exmoor experiencing significantly wetter and cooler conditions than the lowland Levels. Culturally, Somerset holds exceptional heritage significance with Glastonbury (legendary Isle of Avalon, with its abbey ruins, Tor, and world-famous music festival), Wells (England's smallest city, with its magnificent cathedral and Bishop's Palace), Taunton's historic county town character (with its castle, museum, and role as administrative centre), and the towns and villages of the Quantocks and Exmoor. The area preserves exceptional heritage including Dunster Castle (medieval castle dramatically sited), Cleeve Abbey (medieval Cistercian abbey), the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, and the many churches and historic houses of the county. Exmoor National Park offers spectacular walking, red deer, and dramatic coastline while the Quantock Hills (the first AONB designated in England) provide beautiful heathland and woodland. The Somerset Levels (one of the UK's most important wetland areas) support unique wildlife and traditional peat extraction (now largely phased out). The coastline includes Minehead's traditional seaside resort and the wilder stretches of Exmoor coast. The Glastonbury Festival (one of the world's greatest music festivals) attracts international attention while the county's cheddar cheese, cider, and local produce are renowned. Boundary GIS data for Somerset Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this extensive and diverse county, protecting its Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Park, preserving its world-class heritage from Glastonbury to Dunster, and supporting sustainable development across this historically rich part of England.
