About erewash

Erewash is a local government district and borough in Derbyshire, named after the River Erewash which forms its boundary with Nottinghamshire, encompassing the towns of Ilkeston, Long Eaton, and Sandiacre along with numerous villages. This predominantly urban district features strong industrial heritage from lace-making, coal mining, and engineering, attractive Erewash Valley landscapes, and excellent transport links including the M1 motorway. The climate is typical of the English Midlands with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and typical central England conditions. Culturally, Erewash maintains strong identity with Ilkeston's market town character (its historic market place, the Ilkeston Charter Fair (one of the largest and oldest fairs in England), and its industrial heritage), Long Eaton's lace-making heritage (once a world centre for lace production, with many former factories and showrooms now converted), and the district's villages with their traditional character. The area preserves important heritage including Elvaston Castle (Gothic Revival country house with historic gardens and parkland, now a country park), D. H. Lawrence connections (the author lived and set works in the area), and the remains of the Erewash Valley's industrial past including the Nottingham Canal and the Erewash Canal. The Erewash Valley offers green space, walking, and wildlife while the canals provide boating and towpath walks. The district's position on the M1 corridor and close to Derby, Nottingham, and East Midlands Airport supports its role as a commuter and distribution centre. Sandiacre retains its village character while Long Eaton's modern role as a retail centre includes the West Park retail development. Ilkeston's market and fair maintain traditional character while the district's industrial heritage is celebrated at the Erewash Museum. Boundary GIS data for Erewash Borough Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting post-industrial regeneration, canal corridor development, and community planning in this Derbyshire borough.
