About high peak

High Peak is a local government district and borough in Derbyshire, encompassing the towns of Buxton, Glossop, New Mills, and Whaley Bridge along with numerous villages within the heart of the Peak District National Park. This scenically spectacular district features some of the most dramatic landscapes in England, including the limestone dales, gritstone edges, and the highest town in England (Buxton). The climate is markedly upland with higher rainfall than lowland areas, cooler temperatures year-round, and frequent winter snow, creating conditions distinct from surrounding lowlands. Culturally, High Peak holds exceptional significance with Buxton (England's highest market town, famous for its Georgian and Victorian spa heritage, with its magnificent Crescent (restored), the Devonshire Dome (one of the largest unsupported domes in the world), and its opera house and annual Buxton Festival). Glossop retains its mill town character with its historic centre and connections to the Howard family, while New Mills and Whaley Bridge are known for their canal and railway heritage and dramatic gorge scenery. The area preserves important heritage including Lyme Park (magnificent Elizabethan house, National Trust, used as Pemberley in the BBC's Pride and Prejudice), the Peak District's ancient monuments (including Arbor Low stone circle), and the industrial heritage of the Goyt Valley. The Peak District National Park offers world-class walking, cycling, caving, and climbing with famous sites including Kinder Scout (where the mass trespass secured access rights), Mam Tor (the 'Shivering Mountain'), and the Hope and Edale valleys. The High Peak Trail and Tissington Trail (cycling and walking routes on former railway lines) provide traffic-free access to the scenery. The district's villages feature traditional Derbyshire gritstone cottages and chapels while the spa and mill towns maintain their distinctive characters. Boundary GIS data for High Peak Borough Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this nationally important landscape, protecting the Peak District National Park, preserving the unique spa heritage of Buxton, and supporting sustainable tourism in one of England's most beautiful and popular upland areas.
