About dover

Dover is a local government district in Kent, encompassing the iconic White Cliffs port town of Dover, the historic Cinque Port of Sandwich, the coastal town of Deal, and numerous villages within an area of outstanding natural beauty including the Kent Downs AONB. This coastal district features some of England's most iconic landmarks, dramatic chalk cliffs, and rich maritime and military heritage. The climate is maritime with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and more sunshine than many UK areas, with fresh sea breezes from the English Channel. Culturally, Dover holds immense national significance with its White Cliffs (one of Britain's most iconic natural landmarks), Dover Castle (one of England's most important castles, with its Roman lighthouse, Saxon church, and extensive wartime tunnels), and the White Cliffs Country. The area preserves exceptional heritage including the wartime tunnels used during the Dunkirk evacuation, Deal Castle and Walmer Castle (Henrician coastal forts), Sandwich's perfectly preserved medieval town (with its cobbled streets, guildhall, and Barbican), and the rich maritime heritage of Deal and its lifeboat station. The Kent Downs AONB offers spectacular walking along the White Cliffs and the Saxon Shore Way while the coastal towns maintain strong seaside character. Deal's fishing boats still launch from the beach while Sandwich's golf courses (Royal St George's, Open Championship venue) attract enthusiasts. The Port of Dover remains one of the world's busiest passenger ports with ferry connections to France. Boundary GIS data for Dover District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this nationally iconic area, preserving Dover Castle and the White Cliffs, supporting port operations, and protecting the medieval heritage of Sandwich.
