About broadland

Broadland is a local government district in Norfolk, encompassing the northern and eastern suburbs of Norwich including Sprowston, Thorpe St Andrew, and Taverham, along with the market towns of Aylsham and Reepham and numerous villages within an area that includes significant parts of the Broads National Park. This predominantly rural district features the River Bure, the unique wetland landscapes of the Broads, and attractive countryside. The climate is relatively dry by UK standards with low rainfall, warm summers, cool winters, and more sunshine than western areas. Culturally, Broadland maintains strong identity with the Norfolk Broads (including the rivers Bure, Ant, and Thurne) offering boating, fishing, and wildlife watching through some of the UK's most distinctive wetland landscapes. The area preserves important heritage including Blickling Hall (Jacobean mansion, National Trust, though partially in North Norfolk), Aylsham's Georgian market town character with its historic buildings and occasional markets, Reepham's twin churches (unusual arrangement of two churches in one churchyard), and numerous round-towered churches. The district's villages feature traditional Norfolk character with flint cottages, village greens, and country pubs while the Broads villages like Horning, Wroxham, and Coltishall attract visitors with their waterside settings. The Bure Valley Railway (heritage line between Aylsham and Wroxham) adds to the district's attractions while the proximity to Norwich provides urban amenities. Boundary GIS data for Broadland District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this Broads-edge district, supporting sustainable tourism on the waterways, and preserving the character of villages and market towns.
