This data is typically exported as a GPX file, a lightweight XML format that has become the universal language of GPS data exchange. But raw GPX files are just text: a dense list of coordinates and numbers that tell you very little until visualised on a map.
This GPX viewer transforms those coordinates into an interactive picture of your journey. What Information Can You See in a GPX File?
A typical GPX file exported from a sports watch or dedicated GPS unit contains rich data beyond simple coordinates:
Track line — the full path of your route drawn as a continuous line on the map, showing every turn, switchback, and detour you took.
Waypoints — named points of interest embedded in the file, shown as blue markers on the map. Common uses include summits, water sources, campsites, road crossings, and emergency evacuation points.
Elevation data — the altitude above sea level at each recorded GPS point, used to build the elevation profile and compute gain/loss statistics.
Timestamps — the exact date and time of each track point, from which the viewer calculates total duration and (if needed) speed at any point.
Track name — a human-readable name embedded in the GPX metadata or first track element, displayed in popups and used to identify multi-track files.
Understanding the Elevation Profile
The elevation profile chart at the bottom of the tool is one of the most useful features for any outdoor activity. It shows altitude (Y axis, in metres above sea level) against cumulative distance from the start (X axis, in kilometres). The shape of the profile immediately communicates the difficulty of the terrain: a sawtooth pattern indicates repeated steep climbs and descents, a smooth arc shows a single long climb followed by a descent, and a flat line indicates a route with little vertical variation.
Elevation gain and elevation loss are displayed separately because they tell different stories. A 1,000 m elevation gain route is significantly harder than a 200 m gain route of the same distance. The 0.1 m threshold used when counting gain and loss filters out GPS noise — without this, random altitude fluctuations from the GPS signal would artificially inflate both figures, sometimes adding hundreds of phantom metres to a flat run. Hover over any part of the profile chart to see the exact elevation and distance at that point.

Step 1
Tool Opens with Empty World Map
The GPX File Viewer loads showing an empty world map and the sidebar on the right. The sidebar contains an upload zone, track statistics panel, basemap selector, and action buttons. The elevation profile panel sits below the map.
Step 2
File Drop Zone Ready to Accept GPX
The dashed drop zone in the sidebar highlights green when you drag a GPX file over it. You can also click anywhere on the zone to open the system file browser and select a .gpx file from your device.

GPX Track Drawn on Map
After opening a file, the GPS track appears as a green polyline on the map. The sidebar immediately populates with track statistics: total distance, elevation gain, elevation loss, max/min elevation, duration, and point count.
Step 4
Map Zooms to Track Extent
The map automatically fits the view to show the entire track with padding. You can also click "⊙ Zoom to Track" in the sidebar at any time to return to this view, useful after panning away to explore the surrounding area.
Step 5
Click Start or End Marker for Popup
The green circle marks the track start and the red circle marks the finish. Clicking either marker opens a popup showing the elevation at that point and the timestamp if it is embedded in the GPX file.

Topo Basemap Active Showing Terrain
Switching to the Topo basemap reveals contour lines and terrain shading, making it easy to understand the landscape context of your GPS track. Useful for hiking and mountaineering routes where terrain matters.

The Satellite basemap shows aerial and satellite imagery from Esri's World Imagery service. The green GPX track overlays clearly over the aerial photo, letting you see the exact path relative to real-world terrain features, trails, and roads.

The elevation profile chart at the bottom of the tool shows the terrain shape of your entire track. Moving your mouse over the chart displays a dashed vertical line, a dot on the profile, and a tooltip showing the exact distance and elevation at that point.

The Dark basemap provides a high-contrast background that makes the green GPS track stand out vividly. This is particularly useful for screenshots, presentations, and social media sharing of your route.

Waypoints Shown on Map with Popup
Named waypoints embedded in the GPX file appear as blue circle markers. Clicking a waypoint opens a popup showing its name, description, and elevation if available. Waypoints are commonly used for campsites, summits, checkpoints, or points of interest along a route.
