Every standard web map — including this one's own basemap — uses the Mercator projection, which stretches landmasses more the further they sit from the equator. Greenland looks close to Africa's size; in reality Africa is about 14 times larger. This tool corrects that distortion so you can compare any two countries honestly.

Why Maps Distort Country Size
Mercator projection was designed in 1569 for sailors, not geography students — it keeps compass bearings as straight lines, which was essential for navigation. The tradeoff: to keep every line of latitude and longitude crossing at a perfect right angle, the projection stretches landmasses more and more the further they sit from the equator.
How the Correction Works
When you drag a country to a new latitude, this tool rescales its shape by the ratio between the Mercator stretch factor at its original position and at its new one — the same 1 ⁄ cos(latitude) formula that causes the distortion in the first place. Drag Greenland down to the equator and it visibly shrinks to its true, much smaller, relative size.
A Well-Known Illusion
This isn't a new observation. On a standard Mercator map, Alaska looks close to Mexico's size, though Alaska is actually smaller. Russia looks like it spans nearly half the globe, though it's smaller than the combined landmass of Africa.
How to Compare Countries
Build a comparison in two steps:
Search for a country: type a country name in the search box above the map, then pick it from the dropdown — the map flies to its true location and adds its outline in a distinct colour.
Drag to compare: click and hold the country's shape, then drag it anywhere on the map. Its size automatically rescales in real time to reflect its true size at the new latitude, with a live tooltip showing area and the apparent size change.

Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Open the tool
The map loads centred on the Atlantic with three example countries already placed — Greenland, the contiguous United States, and India — so you can see the effect immediately.
Step 2
Search for a country
Type at least two letters of a country name into the search box. Matching countries appear in a dropdown along with their true area in square kilometres.
Step 3
Select a country
Click a result to add its outline to the map. The map automatically flies to and zooms in on the country's true location.
Step 4
Drag the country
Click and hold anywhere on the coloured shape, then drag. A tooltip follows your cursor showing the country's name, true area, and how much its apparent size has changed.
Step 5
Compare side by side
Drop the dragged country next to another one you've added to compare their true relative sizes, free of Mercator's polar exaggeration.
Step 6
Remove or clear
Remove a single country with the × next to its name in the sidebar list, or click Clear All to reset the map.
Step 7
Open in full-screen mode
Click the Full Screen link in the sidebar header for a dedicated full-screen page, ideal for classroom presentations.
